The History of Weaving
Originating from ancient Java, specifically Surakarta and Yogyakarta, lurik patterns always comprise a fusion of stripes or checks. Traditionally worn by rural Javanese men, this fabric is crafted from roughly woven cotton, chosen for its affordability.
The Meaning Behind Each Thread
In true Javanese fashion, each design carries profound symbolism and superstition. For instance, the ‘udan liris’ pattern, featuring broken and scattered stripes, symbolizes fertility and prosperity. The ‘Telupa Lajur motif,’ seen in shirts at the Sultan’s palace and translating to “three-four,” is said to have been conceptualized by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I (1717-1792). Combining the numbers three and four results in seven, a number representing perfection in traditional Javanese beliefs.
What they do
In addition to preserving traditional designs, Lawe also contributes to heritage conservation by crafting their own patterns. Notable among these is Edan-Edanan. Furthermore, they curate new patterns inspired by Indonesian birds, not only celebrating the rich avian diversity but also contributing to their conservation efforts.

Lawe aims to increase awareness and appreciation for weaving as an art form, fostering a deeper connection between people and the cultural heritage it represents.
